UJ Undergraduate Admission Requirements — 2027

UJ uses the Admission Point Score (APS) system, calculated from the six best Grade 12 NSC or IEB subjects. Life Orientation is excluded from all APS calculations.

Final selection in January ranks all applicants from highest to lowest APS — meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission.

Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA):

All programmes based at APB campus. FADA offers programmes in fine art, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, jewellery design and manufacture, fashion design, and architecture. Key requirements:

Most FADA Diplomas (Interior Design, Fashion Design, Jewellery Design, Graphic Design, Photography, Fine Art): APS 20–26; English at level 4 or higher; Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy at specified levels
Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS): APS 30+; Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) required
BFA and BVA (Fine Art / Visual Art degrees): portfolio submission required for selection; APS typically 22–26

College of Business and Economics (CBE):

UJ's largest faculty, spanning Accountancy, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Information Systems, and Management programmes across APK, APB, and SWC campuses. Key requirements:

Most general BCom programmes (Business Management, Marketing, Economics, Finance): APS 26–30; English level 4; Mathematics level 3–4
BCom Accounting and BCom Financial Management (Accounting Science pathway): APS 30–32; English level 4; Mathematics level 5 (60%+)
BCom Chartered Accountancy pathway: APS 34+; Mathematics level 6 (70%+); accredited by SAICA

Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE):

Engineering at APK and DFC campuses. FEBE is the first faculty in South Africa to offer a full range of professional engineering qualifications. Key requirements:

BSc (all standard science streams): APS 28–32; English level 4; Mathematics level 5–6 (70% is the standard bar for most quantitative sciences); Physical Sciences level 5

Honours / Advanced Diplomas: Relevant bachelor's degree in the same or related field; minimum average of 60% (some departments require 65%+)
Master's (coursework): Relevant honours degree; GPA of 60% or higher; some programmes require research proposal and interview
Master's (research): Relevant honours or equivalent; research proposal and confirmed supervisor required; some faculties require pre-registration
PhD: Relevant master's degree; research proposal; supervisor appointment; pre-registration may be required per faculty
